Spire KestrelKing III Heatsink Review
Author: Mike Pengelly
Date: February 29, 2004
Supplied By: Spire
Price: $16 USD

A Closer Look:
According to the specifications, the KestrelKing III heatsink has a copper core. Looking at the heatsink there is no indication of it having a copper core but we may assume that it might be nickel plated as some of the newer Spire Copper Heatsinks are.

The KestrelKing III is equipped with a sensor to pick up the case temperature and adjust fan speed to provide optimal cooling.

Let’s take a look at how well it performed under a little pressure.

Test Setup:
Monitor: KDS Xtreme Flat 17 Inch
Case: Spidey II Case w/ Window and 2 Case Fans
Power Supply: Enermax Noisetaker 420W
Motherboard: Soyo SY-CK8 Dragon Plus
CPU: AMD Athlon64 3000+
Memory: 2 X Geil PC3200 512MB CL2 3-3-6 Timings DDR

DVD Drive: Toshiba 2X DVD-R/RW
CD-RW Drive: Lite-On 40X

A Note On Testing
I want to point this out before I present my numbers from the testing so that there is no confusion. We have consulted with Soyo’s engineers and we have been informed that the AMD Athlon64 has 2 sensor options in the processor. One is a socket air temperature sensor and the other is an on-die temperature sensor. Soyo’s engineers decided to choose the on-die sensor for the hardware monitor on the motherboard. The numbers we are presenting represent temperature values from the on-die sensor. According to AMD’s specifications for this processor, expect socket air temperatures to be ~20-30C lower than the on-die temperatures. This should give everyone an idea of what the typical temperature readings are to compare to other motherboards.
