A Closer Look:
Let’s start by taking a look at the Soltek SL-K8AV-R. There are a few areas in which this Soltek board does not impress. The first issue we had with the SL-K8AV-R was the support for only 2 Memory DIMM. Supporting usage of 2 x 1 GB memory modules is nice however with only two slots we feel this limits expandability greatly. The placement of the Floppy and IDE headers was ideal however and we were pleased with this. Also, the usage of the black PCB with Purple PCI and AGP slots was definitely eye-catching. Soltek only used a passive cooler on the chipset, however this seems to be the norm these days.

The Soltek SL-K8AV-R supports up to 5 PCI devices, with the SL-K8AV-R lacking onboard LAN (Ethernet) most users will find this to be more than sufficient.

Here’s something that is a peeve of mine and I can’t fault anyone for using it, the AGP lock. How I loathe the AGP lock. When using a big video card like the Leadtek 5900 Ultra the clip is unaccessible so in most cases I end up having to remove it anyways. The same held true with this motherboard, I removed the AGP clip.

Another area we had an issue with was the socket area, notice the row of capacitors directly behind the CPU socket, yes, they are in the way. This was another area of concern as it made installing a CPU cooler a difficult job when the board was installed in a case.

The rear panel is fairly standard with the only missing item being the onboard LAN we’ve become accustomed to seeing on motherboards lately.

The only items lacking from all the other VIA K8T800 motherboards on the market is the onboard LAN and 3rd DIMM Memory slot.
