![]() OCZ PowerStream 470W Power Supply Unit Review Author: Dean Nottis Date: September 23, 2004 Supplied By: OCZTechnology Price: $110 USD
A Closer Look
Here is a look at the label on the side of the OCZ PowerStream. This shows the amperage of the rails on all models in the PowerStream family. What should be noted with Power Supply wattage ratings is that far too much emphasis is put on the overall wattage of a Power Supply, many 550 Watt Power Supplies cannot supply decent amperage on certain rails causing issues. It’s more important to look at the amperage delivered on each rail to determine how it will fit your power needs.
An example of what we are talking about above is with the Antec True Control 550 Watt PSU. This unit only delivers 24 Amps on the 12 volt rail, while this OCZ unit provides 30 Amps. While using the Antec we saw the levels dip to 11.7 volts and while using the OCZ the 12 volt rail never dipped below 12 volts. We’ll discuss this later in the performance results. The OCZ PowerStream includes a 24pin to 20pin adaptor. The PowerStream is ready for the next generation motherboards, but includes the adaptor to allow the user to use this Power Supply Unit now with current technology. We’ll see more of this future-proofing OCZ has done with this unit as the review goes on.
The bundle of wires can be a bit menacing to someone unfamiliar with after market Power Supplies, how many OEM PSUs come with a bundle of wires like this?
The PowerStream 470 Watt PSU comes with one chain that includes two native SATA Power Connections. This was just another great feature we loved with this unit.
These are the leads OCZ markets as the PowerShield Power Leads. These are to be used for VGA connections or other sensitive hardware. These leads use enhanced EMI-control technology to reduce interference, stabilize current and filter out any ripple. Basically what these are great for are the dedicated connections that video cards like the nVidia 68000 Ultra requires. Many people are dedicating a complete chain to power these monster video cards, these connections are dedicated and ensure the video card is getting ample and clean power to these types of devices. I had some power issues recently with a 6800 GT and had to dedicate a chain containing four molex connections for it. Had this PSU come in for review a few weeks earlier I’m sure I would have been much happier with the 6800 GT.
Lastly here is a look at the 24pin Power Connection that uses a UV sensitive connector.
Taking a closer look at the unit itself, here is the back panel where the pot adjustments are located to fine tune power levels. Directly under these pots are the LEDs that indicate just how much power is being delivered. They light yellow if under volted, green if within 5% of spec and red if being over volted. We also love the addition of the power switch, too many PSUs today are lacking this simple item.
The OCZ PowerStream PSU features two 80mm fans that utilize OCZ’s Power Whisper Technology, this PSU is absolutely silent. I ran some tests with a PSU tester I have and I can honestly say this is the quietest PSU I’ve ever worked with. Here is a look at the front and back fans.
..and the OCZ PowerStream once we powered up the system.
